All genuine education comes about through experience.

— John Dew

The work experience vs education debate is never ending topic which has no clear winner. We can say that these two criteria are correlated and depends upon each other. People say that experience is the best teacher. The things that you learn from experience are the ones that come along with you for a longer time, and they stay deep-rooted inside you. The real world examples are Michael Dell, Bill Gates and Steve jobs who have been successful entrepreneurs and the astonishing part is that they are college dropouts. However, you can’t ignore the concept of education. In case if experience is the only thing that supports human life then there would be no need for schools and other educational institutions.

Education:

Education can be defined as the process in which intellectual and moral instruction is provided to the students.  Education is extremely important as it allows the individual to expand his horizons.

Experience:

Experience refers to the practical involvement in an activity, event, etc. or the knowledge and skills gained over time. Experience provides us with a special edge over others when engaging in tasks. It gives us a practical knowledge that cannot be gained through education.

Education V/S Experience: –

EDUCATION                                                       EXPERIENCE

Education Provide theoretical knowledgeExperience helps you gain life skills and practical skills which can be used in most real-world context.
Education lays your groundwork for the future;Experience allows you to use that education to the fullest extent.

Value of Education:

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”

John Dewey
  • Education provides students with the right knowledge and skillset they need in a particular field and build a successful career in the same.
  • Education also provides a degree as proof of being educated in a subject and saves time and the risk for employees to hire undertrained people.
  • Education is stepping stone to experience. It helps you to know more and gain experience.
  • Students engage in projects that increase their critical thinking abilities and are trained by professionals and experts in a particular field.

Value of Experience:

What cannot be learnt through education, training, and observation is learnt by experience, and learning through experience is the hardest and the best. For, experience is not inherited; earned

  • Work experience introduces you to the world of work. You get to learn the do’s and don’ts, get work place savvy and learn to navigate your way through the jungle of office politics. Vitally, it’ll give you an idea of the skills you might need to thrive in the workplace.
  • A survey showed two thirds of employers look for graduates with relevant work experience because it helps them prepare for work and develop general business awareness.… It may not give you time to develop job-specific skills, but it can give you insight into the work involved.
  • Work experience helps to find your career path.
  • Reliable work experience helps you gain more contacts regarding the industry you interested in. With such networks, you can gain the opportunity to get into future job offers through contacts or their friends.
  •   Experience helps you to learn about more workplace skills. You can get to experience problem-solving skills, teamwork and communication skills. Workplace etiquette is another aspect that can be learned with experience

Does experience has more weightage than education?

Experience and education are supplementary to each other rather than putting them against one another. To start any entry-level job, you will need a certain basic education, be it graduating from high-school or with a bachelor’s degree, it will vary. Can anyone rely on someone posing as a doctor if he does not possess a degree confirming he has got all the education necessary to be prescribing drugs to patients? Here you Need degree and on the job training.  So experience allows you to use that education to the fullest extent.

Education Produces Knowledge

Experience produces Wisdom

The best advice is that education is the primary step that leads to a successful field of career.  However, it depends on the situation and the career path that you are planning to take. As only certain career requires higher education, which includes lawyer, doctor, professors, etc. In my opinion both plays vital role at their own position if you have good education you can flourish in your job through which you can get good experience. If you have experience but no education, then you can’t get up to the mark or acquire the position which you can get with the help of your qualification which plays important role in your life general. Yes, Work Experience add more weightage to your Resume and it lures your employers. To me, having a degree will be your key to more opportunities and better vocations.

Education lays the groundwork for the future

Experience teaches you to use that education to the fullest extent
